Whatever you do

In the Greek: And all certain(ly) whatever (you) do work heartily as which (or for) lord and no(t) man. Parentheses were added by me to help clarify the Greek into my English.

This verse starts with “And” so it is linked to the previous sentence.

“Slaves, obey your human masters in everything. Don’t work only while being watched, in order to please men, but work wholeheartedly, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men (your boss),”

But I think it also fits with the whole theme of the previous five verses.

“Wives, be submissive to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men (your husband),”

“Husbands, love your wives and don’t be bitter toward them. Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men (your wife),”

“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men (your parents),”

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so they won’t become discouraged. Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men (your children),”

So to sum it all up no matter the relationship with the person you are working for and with remember you are first working for God! There is never a time when you leave God behind and you are never alone. 

“Then Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Verse 23 is also backing up verse 17

“And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

Once again we find an “and”. Let us look into verse 16

“Let the message about the Messiah dwell richly among you, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, and singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

So not only are we to do our with for God but also we are to do it in the name of God. So that way he gets the credit and not us.

The reason why I am bringing up this verse is I found a video on Instagram and the speaker was saying that most of the will of God is “whatever” in our lives. So I wanted to explore what he was saying. And I would agree. There are specific “wills” God wants for us, but most of them are general wills and all He wants from us is to work for Him and His name!
