Humility
Humility
Does humility only look after other’s needs and forget your own needs? Absolutely not! For if our needs are not taken care of then the whole time we are being humble we can actually become bitter. But here is where needs, wants, and desires meet. Needs are food, clothes, shelter, water, and love. Wants are beyond that. And desires are wants that we have let try to become needs.
Have we taken time for some food? Are we clothed and ready for the day? Do we have a house and a bed to sleep in? Is there anyone in your corner for you (spouse or friend)? If yes applies to all the above then you are ready to look after the needs of others and bitterness should be held back. If no applies to one or more questions then take time to re-evaluate your needs.
After both focus verses, we find:
“Make your own attitude that of Christ Jesus, who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be used for His own advantage. Instead He emptied Himself by assuming the form of a slave, taking on the likeness of men. And when He had come as a man in His external form, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death — even to death on a cross.”
Philippians 2:5-8 HCSB
“casting all your care on Him, because He cares about you.”
First, we find Jesus the example of humility and a servant.
And
Second, we find that we are to lean on God!
The people with humility in the correct balance will be people who rely on God for their needs and are willing to serve as Jesus did (for more insight check out “The Dining Car” and “Peace”).
Jesus is our example of humility! When he was falsely accused, right before the cross, He did not lash out with His righteous God nature but held His peace knowing that God knew the truth.
“The high priest then stood up and said to Him, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You? ” But Jesus kept silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “By the living God I place You under oath: tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God! ” “You have said it,” Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Matthew 26:62-64 HCSB
There was confidence in Jesus where He was in God but humility with Him where he was with people. Do we live with the same humility and confidence?
